Things You Should Never Put Down Your Drain

1) Oil or Grease of Any Type

While melted oil or grease is likely to seem fine when you put it down the drain, it can solidify and stick to the sides later on. This can create a massive mess as other items go down the drain and stick, too!

2) Coffee Grounds

Coffee grounds will go down well, as long as they have water to help them. Otherwise, they can clump and create massive lumps of brown sludge. If they mix with anything sticky, they can pose a major threat to your sewers.

3) Eggshells

If you look carefully, you will notice a membrane on the inside of eggshells. This can get caught in the sewer line, stretching and wrapping around a number of things in the line until you have a big clog you need to deal with.

4) Medication

Medications may not stick in your sewer line, but they can lead to water contamination later on. If they dissolve in the water, they may be difficult to remove as the sewage is processed. Eventually, they may end up harming plants and animals if they remain in the water.

5) Chemicals

Chemicals can cause similar problems to medications. They can also corrode your pipes. Even chemicals that you wouldn’t think about as corrosive, like some cleaning agents, can be under the right circumstances. You can also end up with unwanted chemical interactions in your sewer that produce toxins or become sticky sludge.

6) Pasta, Rice, and Kitty Litter

These are in the same category because they all expand when they get wet. Even if you have already cooked the pasta or rice, there’s a chance they will grow more in your sewer. They all also become soggy and stick to themselves when wet, which can produce another kind of sewer issue.

7) Paper Towels

Honestly, any paper products that aren’t toilet paper should go in the trash or recycling, not the sewer. They are too heavy to flow down the line unless accompanied by quite a lot of water, and so they can anchor themselves to the bottom of the sewer, creating problems.
